RICHLAND, Wash. – Washington State University Tri-Cities experienced another record enrollment this fall, celebrating a 5.1 percent increase in undergraduate students, which brings the campus to a total of 1,937 students.

The overall enrollment increased by 3.7 percent and the growth this fall contributes to a 49 percent increase in enrollment since 2013 for the ĢƵ campus.

“We attribute this to so many factors,” said Mika McAskill, ĢƵ director of admissions. “We are growing because our excellent academic programs and student-focused approach, being able to provide access to research opportunities and internships at both the undergraduate and graduate level, and of course, our enthusiasm for meeting the higher education needs of our region and state.”

New freshman enrollment numbers reflect a 42.9 percent increase over last year. ĢƵ remains the most diverse campus in the WSU system, with 38.9 percent of students identifying as minority. Enrollment figures also indicate that 95.4 percent of students are Washington residents, highlighting ĢƵ’ on-going commitment as a land-grant institution that prepares the state’s future professionals to continue to grow Washington’s economy.

McAskill said Tri-Cities Cougs are able to thrive in a small, private-school education setting, with low student-to-instructor ratios, all at a public school cost. She said ĢƵ students have the opportunity to graduate career-ready as a result of pairing their coursework with internships and other real-world experiences by leveraging resources and WSU partnerships locally, nationally and internationally.

“Our students understand the value of hands-on project opportunities, and so many of our new students come to us already knowing about the connections we have and the kind of support that comes with joining the Cougar family,” she said.

In addition to the academic programming and overall support students experience at ĢƵ, the students also saw the opening of their new Student Union Building this month. The $5.73 million facility provides students with their own space to relax, study, grab a bite to eat and socialize between and after classes. The university also has campus housing coming to students in the near future.

“There are many great things happening at ĢƵ, and it is all out of a commitment to providing our students with the resources and infrastructure to be successful,” McAskill said. “We aim to continue to grow these opportunities for our students because when they win, our state wins.”

“This positive increase is an indicator that our community is finding value with our student-focused, personalized approach to higher education,” said Mika McAskill, ĢƵ director of admissions. “The feedback our faculty and staff receive suggests students see our unique position as a campus that is proactive in connecting industry to classroom and that fosters invaluable relationships to create career-prepared graduates.”

ĢƵ continues to be the most diverse campus in the WSU system, with 35.8 percent of students identifying as minorities, 57.4 percent female and 36.6 percent first generation.

In addition to students, the campus continues to grow in facilities and programming. The ĢƵ student union building under construction will be open in the fall. Recently the campus also added undergraduate degrees in biology and fine arts.

“As the Tri-Cities and the region continue to grow, ĢƵ enrollment is growing by continuing to offer tremendous value with a polytechnic approach of ‘learn while doing’ in a student’s field of study and desired career,” said ĢƵ Chancellor Keith Moo-Young. “Our students work closely with faculty and staff, where they find opportunities for internships, co-ops, research and real-life application of their degrees.”

He said he is confident students at ĢƵ will enter the professional marketplace career-ready with the ability to adapt to a global economy.

RICHLAND, Wash. – Washington State University Tri-Cities continues to set enrollment records with 17 percent growth from last fall, according to official numbers released Friday.

Enrolled students, which includes undergraduate, transfer and graduate students, total 1,868 – an increase of 275 students compared to last fall. Included in that growth, ĢƵ welcomed 284 transfer students, which marks a 35.2 percent increase in that category from last fall.

enrollment-2“We couldn’t be more pleased with the rate at which ĢƵ is growing, while not compromising on the preparedness of our students, as well as the diversity of our student body,” ĢƵ Chancellor Keith Moo-Young said. “Our growth is truly a reflection of the excellent programs, career opportunities and volunteer experiences our students observe.”

ĢƵ is recognized as having a very diverse student population, with 33.5 percent of students identifying as minorities, 58.5 percent female and 38.4 percent first generation college students. Of the new freshman on campus, 58.8 percent identify as first generation, which is 21.2 percent higher than the average first generation new freshmen in the WSU system.

Moo-Young said through the construction of ĢƵ’ first student union building, in addition to the construction of the student housing complex, the university continues to grow the resources available to students, which has also had an impact on the positive enrollment trajectory.

“As we continue to grow in numbers, we also continue to grow in programs available to students and in physical infrastructure,” he said. “These university improvements will continue to have a positive effect on our growth as a campus and in our ability to meet the industry needs by supplying career-ready graduates in the science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics fields.”
